What do Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, and
Urinetown have in common? Magic Theatre has lured creative
talent from all of these Broadway hit musicals to work on
the world premiere musical that launches the 2004-05 season.
The Opposite of Sex previews in late September and
takes off in October with a cast that sings and dances through
a plot laced with wanton humor.
Based on the screenplay from the cult 1998 movie of the same
name, Opposite of Sex tells the story of Dedee Truitt,
a devious, trash-talkin teen from Louisiana who sleeps
her way to Los Angeles to torment her brother, Bill. Kerry
Butler, recently in the Hairspray cast, reprises the
film role made famous by Christina Ricci. Butlers stage
credits range from Beauty and the Beast and Les
Misérables to Batboy.
Dedee does anything to get what she wants, including blackmail,
and she wreaks havoc throughout the musical. She seduces her
brothers hunky boyfriend and the disasters spread outward
from that act. A cast of misfit characters propels the snarky
farce forward, including a middle-aged virgin, a religious
fanatic, and a punk on a vendetta. Be prepared for lots of
witty repartée that takes being politically incorrect
to a new, outrageous level.
Opposite of Sex also has some great songs, courtesy
of composer and writer Douglas J. Cohen. The director, Broadway
pro Robert Jess Roth, keeps the action moving along, as he
did with his Tony-nominated work for Beauty and the Beast.
No stranger to musicals, Roth collaborates with a wide range
of artists from Sir Elton John to Alice Cooper.
Add some spice to your fall season with The Opposite of
Sex. Check out
