Why wait until Thanksgiving to start your holiday shopping?
The Association of Clay & Glass Artists of California
(ACGA) presents its annual Clay & Glass Festival in mid-November,
well before the onslaught of maximum shopping frenzy.
The Clay & Glass Fest has gained a reputation as the
best place to find unique handmade gifts of great beauty.
The wares of glass and ceramic artisans are a wonderful alternative
to the mass-produced gift items commonly found at malls. For
example, Sabine Brunner crafts whimsical, brightly painted
ceramic bowls, plates, mugs, vases, pet dishes, and childrens
tea sets.
Another artist, Susan Farley, swirls dollops and daubs of
colorful opaque glass into clear glass forms to create jewel-like
perfume bottles, paperweights, and vases. Inspired by folk
art and Chagall, Sonoma County artist Zak Zaikine paints dogs,
cats, chickens, fish, and people on a variety of ceramic items.
In addition to many booths filled with decorative and functional
pieces, blown and sculpted glass, jewelry, and ornaments,
the festival features special events. There is a multimedia
presentation on works in the making, as well as throwing demonstrations
by potter Mark Untener. The Clay For Kids workshop teaches
ceramic skills while parents shop. Vendors of delicious food
and beverages offer festival participants the perfect opportunity
for a refreshment break.
Nearly 60 years old, ACGA has been supporting the arts community
through workshops, programs, exhibits, and other projects
since 1945. Check out this classic SF Bay Area arts event
and discover the glittering world of glass and clay. See November
13 and www.acga.net
for details.
