November 2004:
Sightums
Controversial director Vincent Gallo
took a media interview over lunch at Greens. He was
in town for the local premiere of Brown Bunny at the
Lumiere. Lisa Kudrow and Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie
Howser) were in the audience for the opening of Magic Theatres
Opposite of Sex. Kudrow, you might remember, was in
the movie. For lucky ticket holders to the SF Blues Festival,
Carlos Santana was a late and no doubt heartily welcomed
addition to the event. Also, late breaking, Tony Kushner
booked the Cowell Theater at the last minute for a
special luncheon speech to benefit Gateway charter schools.
Attending the luncheon were Oakland Mayor and former Governor
Jerry Brown and District Attorney Kamala Harris.
More Sightums
More politicos on campus included
former US secretary of State George Shultz and Ronald
Reagan, Jr. They were at the Cowell to speak about stem
cell research, the first event for the new Willie L. Brown
Institute on Politics and Public Service. The former Mayor
was here, as well as respected experts on both sides of the
controversial issue.
Still More Sightums
House Democratic Leader Nancy
Pelosi was at the Cowell Theater for the premiere of her
daughters documentary Diary of a Political Tourist
about this years Democratic political primaries.
Alexandra Pelosi also, as the San Francisco Examiners
P.J. Corkery mentioned, produced Journeys with George,
a documentary about our current President.
Ann Rockefeller Roberts, daughter of the late philanthropist
and former US Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller,
and Alfonso de Maria y Campos, Consul General of Mexico,
co-hosted a recent fund-raiser for the Mexican Museum.
The fund-raiser was held at the San Francisco Marriott, just
a few blocks away from the museums future home on Mission.
Meanwhile, museum goers can check out the Mexican Museum here
in Building D for a while longer.
Printums
Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC)
had a huge story in a recent San Francisco Chronicle.
And its a great story to tell. ETC, says the Chron,
enables urban kids, the disabled, and the disadvantaged
to have close and personal encounters with the wet and wild
kayaking, whitewater rafting, and cross-country ski
trips. A great organization!
More Press Magic
With recent stories in The
Miami Herald, the Dallas/Ft.Worth Star-Telegram,
and the Detroit Free Press, Magic Theatre
and its artistic director, Chris Smith, continue to
get kudos for a groundbreaking approach to theater.
