DECEMBER
2004
Conference Center, Building A
The San Francisco Bay Area is home to many holiday crafts
fairs filled with unique items. However, Fort Mason Center
is the only West Coast location for a special sale featuring
graduates of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design
(RISD). More than 35 RISD alumni participate in the arts and
crafts sale at Fort Mason Center.
On the second weekend in December, dozens of talented artists
and craftspeople bring jewelry, ceramics, toys, fine art,
maps, accessories, and wearable art to the Conference Center.
These artisans share a common background they all went
to RISD, a globally recognized center for art, design, and
architecture. The quality of items for sale reflects RISDs
sterling reputation.
For example, RISD graduate Susan Eslicks boldly colored
ceramic pieces have delighted collectors for more than 20
years. Major department and museum stores carry her work,
including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim
museum store, Neiman Marcus, and the Boston Museum of Fine
Arts. Eslick travels to Deruta, Italy each summer to create
designs for a ceramics factory in Umbria a region known
for great pottery since the 15th century.
Photorealist painter David Holmes is another RISD graduate
participating in the sale. Holmes translates vivid cityscapes
onto large canvases. His goal is to preserve vanishing aspects
of San Francisco and other communities, such as old stores
and scenes that evoke the past. Holmes has painted subjects
ranging from the Santa Monica Pier to the last Doggie Diner
head on display in San Francisco.
Attend a distinctive holiday sale and meet innovative artists
this December. Refer to December
12 for event specifics.
