Celebrating 40 Years Of BooksRumblings & Ramblings

December 2004:
Restaurant Rumors…
For the briefest of moments, a story of a third restaurant – to compete with Greens and Cooks & Co., at Fort Mason Center – buzzed about the campus. The gist of the story was that the Conference Center would be converted into a high-end, by-the-bay dining spot. Some had seen the proposed menus. Not true. Seems as though a student from a local culinary academy was doing a homework assignment. Braised scuttlebutt, anyone?

Browsing The Bay For Books… The Book Bay Bookstore offers more than books. Old postcards, prints, audio books, and movies are also available. They also have the complete San Francisco Chronicle for December 1906. Then again, if you want books, they have plenty of those too, including several collections of Galsworthy and Freud, among others.

The Play is the Thing…Charles Grodin, whose play The Right Kind of People opened in November at the Magic Theatre, spent some time with ABC-7 news anchor Pete Wilson to discuss life, art, and politics recently. Also, a special reception – an Evening with Charles Grodin – for the author, actor, and director was held at the Cowell Theater. Proceeds benefited End Hunger Now.

Quarter Of A Century Ago… Michael McClure’s Josephine the Mouse Singer played on the Magic’s stage in November, 1979. Lawrence Ferlinghetti was here in a program called, "Rockers, Poets Unite Against Nukes." Greenpeace was here a few times to talk about nuclear power plants and other environmental issues. "Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon" was regularly performed in what was then called the Marina Music Hall. Be-Bopology was the bill one week, Brass Madness another.

Granted…The renowned women’s vocal ensemble Kitka’s performance at the Cowell Theater is part of a series of free performances for students sponsored by the Young Audiences of Northern California. The series is funded in part by the Fort Mason Foundation’s Shulte Grants for the Arts and Crafts. And this is a reminder, keep checking www.fortmason.org for more information about the next round of Shulte grants.

Sightums…San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was at the Cowell twice recently, once to speak at the Nonprofit Housing Association conference and again to help the California Lawyers for the Arts celebrate their 30th Anniversary. Also at the birthday party were Supervisors Tom Ammiano, Aaron Peskin, and Mark Leno.

More Political Sightums…Back for at least the third time, Dennis Kucinich held a meeting at Greens. The famous vegetarian has made the grand and famous vegetarian restaurant a home away from Ohio.

Take a Look…Visitors might notice the scaffolding on the side of Pier One (the West Pier). Work has begun to preserve the exterior of the building, keeping it in one piece until funds are available to make it ready for occupancy.
