Magic Theatre, Building D
The final play in Magic Theatre’s 2007-2008 season is a tangled tale of love, sex, jealousy, and commitment — a searing drama viewed through the multifaceted lens of the post-modern gay community. Steve Yockey’s bold new work, Octopus, examines the fallout of one night of lust and how it affects four men. Magic Theatre teamed with San Francisco’s Encore Theatre Company to co-produce Octopus after an earlier workshop version generated strong audience response.
“We are thrilled to get the opportunity to be able to work with Encore,” said David Jobin, Managing Director at Magic Theatre. “This has been a partnership in the making for the past couple of years and Octopus is the perfect project for our companies to collaborate on.”
See the play to solve the puzzle of how a mysterious telegram delivery boy and a ravenous monster from the ocean floor are connected to the love quadrangle at the center of Octopus. These are just a few examples of the wild ideas common in Yockey’s plays. “Disturbing,” “sinister,” and “elegant” are among the adjectives critics used to describe some of his previous plays.
Yockey is a hot young playwright who has been incredibly prolific while still pursuing his graduate degree in dramatic writing. The Magic-Encore production gets added punch from Octopus director Kate Warner, a long-time Yockey collaborator.
“Steve Yockey is a playwright to watch with a unique voice and a purely theatrical imagination,” said Lisa Steindler, Encore’s Artistic Director. “We are proud to give him a platform to launch his national career. Steve is with us throughout the process. We couldn’t be happier to be part of the development of this important work.”
