OCTOBER 2008

INVESTING IN POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE FOR THE FUTURE

Herbst Pavilion, Building A Conference Center, Building C, Firehouse & Cowell Theater

A new conference for investors and entrepreneurs comes to the San Francisco Bay Area when Fort Mason Center hosts Social Capital Markets 2008 (SOCAP 08) in mid-October. This innovative networking event connects individuals and organizations with similar goals — doing well by doing good work all over the planet.

SOCAP 08 is a new concept in the social investing world. SOCAP 08 seeks to join people and organizations sharing a passionate dedication to changing the world through sustainable business. Many of these investors and entrepreneurs have already started their work as solo efforts.

SOCAP 08 organizers feel that those groups who have been working on their own to build new socially aware communities will be encouraged by attending this conference and discovering that they are not alone in their mission to improve economic and social conditions on a global basis.

Sessions commence on October 13 with presentations by the Stanford Social Innovation Review journal, The University of California’s Haas School of Business, Rockefeller Philanthropy, Benetech, Better World Books, and many other heavy hitters from the world of socially responsible investing. Topics covered include Social Investing 101, Social Capital Markets 101, Social Enterprise 101, New Wealth Management, Mission-Related Investing, and more.

Proceedings on subsequent days offer insights into investing in and promoting clean and green technology, fair trade markets, online communities, digital inclusion, and sustainable design. Venture capital firms, investment banks, foundations, and angel investors also participate in SOCAP 08.

The third day of the event on Wednesday, October 15, is an “unconference,” or series of workshops, featuring speakers from The Economist, Google.org, Changents.com, World of Good, IDEO, Equilibrium Capital, and the Acumen Fund, among others.

The diversity and tenacity of the social investment community is a wonder to behold and a great undertaking in which to take part. For more information on attending or participating in SOCAP 08, refer to October 13 and www.socialcapitalmarkets.net.
