In complex modern times, helping preserve rainforests involves helping the indigenous people who live in rainforests and are best suited to care for these fragile ecosystems. The Pachamama Alliance nonprofit group leads the way in rainforest preservation efforts through its innovative programs to empower the Achuar and other Amazonian tribes on the front lines in the battle to prevent rainforest destruction.
Pachamama hosts a rainforest luncheon each fall at Fort Mason Center to raise funds for its projects. The 2008 luncheon takes place in the Festival Pavilion on Wednesday, November 12 from noon to 1:30 p.m. An outgrowth of its work with the Achuar in Ecuador inspired Pachamama organizers to extend the group’s mission into new areas of social justice. The Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream initiative focuses on “the creation of a new global vision of equity and sustainability for all.”
In order to realize its evolving vision, Pachamama has forged partnerships with other nonprofit groups, such as MoveOn.org, VolunteerMatch.org, and EthicalConsumer.org. These and other organizations are collaborating to find ways to encourage people to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, consume less, and contribute more to improving existence for all.
