Brendan Fernandes, Safely (2017)

Presented By

FOR-SITE Foundation

Jan 13th @ 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The FOR-SITE Foundation presents “Sanctuary” artist Brendan Fernandes in a site-specific performance exploring sacred space at the “Sanctuary” exhibit in the Upper Fort Mason Chapel at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. During the Safely performance, Canadian-based artist Fernandes uses improvisational choreography to create meditative motions among the “Sanctuary” artists’ rugs.

The performance activates the “Sanctuary” floor pieces as objects of devotion by having the dancers’ gestures suggest they are cleaning the sacred rugs with reverence and humility. The performers also enact movements of falling to evoke harm or violence directed against vulnerable bodies.
