Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

About: Paul Reubens’ campy Pee-wee Herman character realizes his full Technicolor glory in this finely crafted, comedic road trip film helmed by Tim Burton. The story is simple: when a man’s beloved bike is stolen, he sets out on a journey to find it. However, in the hands of Reubens and Burton, the film combines Reubens’ love of Disney’s optimistic orphan Pollyanna (1960) with an homage to Vittorio de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948), creating a series of vignettes that form the hero’s journey across a picaresque vision of mid-1980s America.
