The Farewell
About: Lulu Wang’s intergenerational drama, loosely based on her own family, follows Billi (Awkwafina) as she grapples with a fellowship rejection and the news that her grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shu-zhen) has terminal lung cancer. Extra news: her family plans to keep the diagnosis a secret from Nai Nai. As they reroute a cousin’s wedding to Nai Nai’s hometown in China, planning the celebration as a secret good-bye, Billi’s parents encourage her to maintain her own silence by staying in New York. But Billi crashes the party in Changchun and struggles to keep the family’s peace. Wang composed the film’s source story, “What You Don’t Know,” for This American Life in 2016.
