The Last Black Man In San Francisco

About: In Joe Talbot’s debut film, from a story based on lead Jimmie Fails’ own upbringing in San Francisco, Jimmie traverses the city by skateboard, on foot, and by bus with his best friend Montgomery (Jonathan Majors). His movement remains haunted by a first love: the Fillmore district Victorian he grew up in, built by his grandfather but now lost to his family. When the white couple now living there suddenly move out, Jimmie sees an opportunity to reclaim his legacy. From Mont’s grandfather’s house in Bayview-Hunters Point to the grand Victorian itself, Talbot’s love letter to San Francisco maintains its clear-eyed view on white gentrification, African American displacement, and the creative dreams made possible by a sense of “home.”  This 2019 Best Director winner at Sundance quickly claimed its place as one of the year’s and decade’s best films.
