San Francisco Children's Art Center

Through Aug 14th

For Summer 2020, the San Francisco Children’s Art Center (SFCAC) at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture (FMCAC) has both virtual and in-person options for children ages six years through 11 years old. For children five years old and younger, send SFCAC an email message to inquire about possible virtual art workshops designed for those age groups. Check out samples of SFCAC’s art teaching methods with the free “Family Art Activities” videos in English and Spanish and printable PDF handouts in Chinese, English, and Spanish.

The 2020 “Music, Art & Drama (MAD) Camp” conducted by FMCAC resident groups SFCAC, Blue Bear School Of Music, and Young Performers Theatre (YPT) is an online Zoom adventure for children ages six years to 11 years old (grades one through five). The week-long camp features hour-long workshops in art, music, and play creation, Monday through Friday, June 15 to June 19, 2020, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ($250).

SFCAC’s “Online Creative Camps” offer 90-minute Monday through Friday daily sessions (11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) with art games, projects, and an art kit to explore different themes each week. The theme for June 22 to June 26, 2020 is “Puppets & Puppet Theater Workshop;” followed by “Drawing & Painting From Observation & Imagination,” June 29 to July 3, 2020.

The next “Online Creative Camp” theme is “Storytelling & Bookmaking” from July 6 through July 10, 2020; with “Sculpture Workshop” following on July 13 through July 17, 2020. The final creative camp held July 20 through July 24, 2020 is going to be a surprise theme — the most popular theme from the five 2020 camps.

Each week of creative camp costs $150 and includes an art kit with all necessary materials (available by mail or socially distanced pick-up). Parents and caregivers are welcome to sit in on the camps and, at the end of each week, SFCAC offers a virtual art gallery of the art created in the camp to share with friends and family. The puppet creative camp includes materials to build puppets and a mini-puppet theater designed for Zoom video performances.

The exclusive, in-person “Creative Connections Camp” is three weeks of art-making joy held July 27 to August 14, 2020, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The $1,500 camp is limited to four lucky children working with a teaching artist and a health and safety monitor. The camp is mostly outdoors and features exploring and creating in the fresh air with excursions to be inspired by nearby public art, marine wildlife, and the Fort Mason Community Garden.
