Join the National Park Service, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (SFMNHP), and the SFMNHP Association at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture (FMCAC) for a fascinating series of events leading to the 24-hour Moby-Dick Reading Marathon in October 2022. The FMCAC portions of the “Moby-Dick Marathon Lecture Series” occur on Thursday, September 8, 2022, Thursday, October 13, 2022, and Tuesday, October 18, 2022 in the SF Maritime Research Center in Building E, on the third floor.

Each evening features a different distinguished scholar and Moby-Dick expert discussing amazing topics related to historical or contemporary trends reflected in Herman Melville’s masterpiece novel, Moby-Dick. For Thursday, September 8, 2022, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., interdisciplinary artist Alessia Cecchet presents a talk and screening “Chasing the Whale Who Wasn’t: Art, Affect, and Submerged Histories,” about her film Chasing the Whale Who Wasn’t.

University of California–Berkeley Geography Professor Sharad Chari presents “Pip, Ellen Gallagher & The White Whale: The Afrofuturism Of Moby-Dick” on Thursday, October 13, 2022, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Stanford University Professor Margaret Cohen surveys the history of Moby-Dick films in “Whale-Eye Fantasies Across The History Of Film.” Cohen is the author of The Underwater Eye: How The Movie Camera Opened The Depths & Unleashed New Realms Of Fantasy (2022), editor of the six-volume anthology, A Cultural History of the Sea (2021), and many other maritime and literary works.
