During Fall 2019, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) | Fort Mason Campus offers inspiring art courses for the public at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. Held on evenings and Saturdays, these painting courses are perfect for beginners or more advanced students and are taught by experienced artists, all SFAI graduates.

Introduction To Oil Painting. Tuesdays, September 17, 2019 to December 3, 2019, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. $530.  Large- and small-scale oil painter Robert X. Burden shares classical oil painting techniques and encourages students to experiment with form, value, color, composition, perspective, and figure/ground relationships. Introductory assignments strengthen observational skills and focus on realism. Later classes cover figure painting through alla prima painting (complete in one session) and sustained poses (completed via multiple sessions). The final course segments involve reproduction of an Old Master painting. (Meets in Studio 26, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)

Advanced Acrylic TechniquesThursdays, September 26, 2019 to November 7, 2019, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (no class October 31, 2019) $295. Painter, photographer, sculptor, and collage and digital artist Tom Colcord helps students focus on formal aspects of painting while maintaining their unique styles and conceptual interests. Alla Prima Paint-Off. Wednesdays, October 9, 2019 to December 11, 2019, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. $480. Ingrid V. Wells leads this fast-paced oil-painting class, where students execute a complete painting in a single sitting. (Meets in Studio 26, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)

Contemporary Landscape Painting. Saturdays, October 26, 2019 to December 7, 2019, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (no class November 30, 2019). $295. Instructor Lauren Jade Szabo focuses on hands-on demonstrations, studio practice, and one-on-one tutoring to help students investigate natural, urban, and hybridized landscapes using contemporary painting techniques. $480 (Meets in Studio 27, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)
