San Francisco Art Institute Public Education Courses Fall 2018

San Francisco Art Institute | Fort Mason Campus

Through Dec 6th

For Fall 2018, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) | Fort Mason Campus offers great art courses for the public at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. Held on evenings and weekends, these painting courses are perfect for beginners or more advanced students and are taught by experienced artists, all SFAI graduates.

Portrait Painting. Wednesdays, September 12, 2018 to December 5, 2018, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (no class November 21, 2018) Taught by proficient painter and artist Ingrid V. Wells, this oil painting course shares best practices for figure painting. Each student creates a proposal for a series of oil portraits and chooses source materials and approaches. Recommended for intermediate to advanced painters, however, no figure painting experience is necessary. $530 (Meets in Studio 27, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)

Abstraction Concentration. Wednesdays, September 19, 2018 to November 7, 2018, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Alice Gould leads exploration of abstract painting with oils on canvas or panels. Experiment with brush choices, color, palette knives, and painting media. Discover inspiration in nature and natural phenomena and develop a personal expressive style. Students can work on a series of smaller works, or focus on one or several larger canvases. Beginning painters welcome. $480 (Meets in Studio 26, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)

Introduction To Oil Painting. Thursdays, September 13, 2018 to December 6, 2018, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (no class November 21, 2018) Large- and small-scale oil painter Robert X. Burden shares classical oil painting techniques and encourages students to experiment with form, value, color, composition, perspective, and figure/ground relationships. Introductory assignments strengthen observational skills and focus on realism. Later classes cover figure painting through alla prima painting (complete in one session) and sustained poses (completed via multiple sessions). The final course segments involve reproduction of an Old Master painting. No pre-requisites needed. $530 (Meets in Studio 27, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)

Advanced Painting Lab + Seminar. Saturdays, September 8, 2018 to November 17, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (no classes September 22, October 6, or November 10, 2018) Interdisciplinary artist Danielle Lawrence provides an open environment for individual project work, preferably on a large-scale piece. Lawrence supplies prompts to help students define authentic voices, push beyond comfort zones, and experiment with new painting concepts. Critiques, discussions, readings, and museum and gallery visits help students shape artistic goals within the context of contemporary art. Some drawing and painting experience recommended. $385 (Meets in Studio 26, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)
