Summer Art Classes 2018

For Summer 2018, the San Francisco Children’s Art Center (SFCAC) at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture has 10 Big Kids Afternoon Weekly Workshops (ages five years through 10 years old) to inspire creating, collaborating, and sharing through visual arts.

Each week (Monday-Friday, 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., or 5:30 p.m.) offers wide-ranging explorations of different ideas and materials to inspire art-making. Classes include: “Young Artists Workshop” (June 4-8 or July 16-20, 2018, $240-$310; $65-$80 drop-in), “Painting & Drawing” (June 11-15, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in), “Architectural Sculpture” (June 25-29, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in), “Observational Drawing” (July 2, 3, 5 & 6, 2018, $248; $80 drop-in), “Photo Explorers” (July 9-13, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in) “Art & Science” (July 23-27, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in), “Art In The Garden” (July 30-August 3, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in), “Land, Sea, and City” (August 6-10, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in), and “Sculpture” (August 20-24, 2018, $310; $80 drop-in). These workshops inspire deep investigations of the challenges and choices found in two- and three-dimensional forms.

The weekly classes for younger kids (22 months to 5 years) meet on weekday and Saturday mornings June 4, 2018 through August 25, 2018 and provide age-appropriate art instruction and activities. Options include: “Art Studio I” (ages three years to five years old, Monday & Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 1.5-hour classes, $320; $35 drop-in), “Art Studio II” (ages three and a half years old to five years old, Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or Saturday, 10:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m., two-hour classes, $360; $45 drop-in), “Little Art Makers” (ages 27 months to 36 months old; Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., one-hour classes, $240; $30 drop-in), “Side By Side” (ages 22 months to 36 months old; Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; one-hour classes, $240, for children and adult caregivers; $30 drop-in), and “Homeschool Art Studio” (ages 22-26 months old with caregiver), Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; two-hour classes, $360 ; $45 drop-in).

A full-day Music, Art & Drama (MAD) camp held with Young Performers Theatre (YPT) and Blue Bear School of Music for children in grades one through five is also available. Scheduled for Monday through Friday, June 18-22, 2018, the MAD Camp offers morning “Performance Workshops” at YPT from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a supervised lunch break from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (students bring their own lunches), and an art studio session at SFCAC plus a Blue Bear class from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday sessions last until 5:30 p.m. and include artwork viewing and performances at Blue Bear and YPT. The MAD camp costs $495 (YPT Morning Extended Care available from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. for an additional $75).

An additional SFCAC And YPT Performing & Visual Arts camp takes place Monday through Friday, August 13-17, 2018. This camp offers morning “Performance Workshops” at YPT from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a supervised lunch break from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (students bring their own lunches), and an art studio session at SFCAC from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (“Puppet Theater”). The Performing & Visual Arts camp costs $240 for mornings only, $310 for afternoons only, or $525 for the full-day sessions.

Prices vary per class and drop-ins for individual class sessions are welcome (one-hour classes $30, 1.5-hour classes $35, two-hour classes $45, three-hour workshop $65, and four-hour workshop $80). Drop-ins are only available for SFCAC’s afternoon portion of the Performing & Visual Arts camp. Children must enroll for the complete five-day SFCAC, YPT & Blue Bear MAD camp.
