avaf’s reimagined roller rink, a 21st-century social sculpture drawing on the optimism and democratic energy of disco-driven skate sites, blended psychedelia, color fields, and gender-queer imagery from San Francisco’s legendary performance troupe The Cockettes. Local roller-skating organizations Church of 8 Wheels and Bay Area Derby partnered with Fort Mason to produce and operate the rink, providing hosts, DJs, and special programs throughout the run.
The San Francisco Art Institute hosted a Graduate Student Lecture Series presentation featuring Eli Sudbrack of avaf on September 13, 2019. The exhibition featured an extensive lineup of resident and guest DJs including Hard French, Bus Station John, Cliff Hengst, Brontez Purnell, Jill Reiter, and Whoop Dee Doo, among others.
assume vivid astro focus was founded by Eli Sudbrack (b. 1968, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in 2001. Sudbrack began working with Christophe Hamaide Pierson (b. 1973, Paris) in 2005 as a duo that often morphs into a collective. avaf works in a vast array of media and confronts gender, politics, and embedded cultural codes through pop imagery and neon colors. Major exhibitions include Whitney Biennial (2004), MoMA (2008), Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (2015), and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo (2009).
The Church of 8 Wheels, an organization led by the “Godfather of Skate” David Miles Jr. and his partner Rose Miles, has reimagined the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Fillmore and Fell as a regular destination for positivity, music, and community-building through skating.
Bay Area Derby is a non-profit, fully volunteer-driven, skater-owned-and operated organization that provides amateur athletic opportunities for people to play flat-track roller derby in the region while giving back to the community that has supported it since 2004.
