In this third installment of Points of Departure, go behind the scenes with Stern Grove Festival to explore its past, present, and future.
The evening features a panel conversation with Stern Grove Festival’s Executive Director Bob Fiedler, Board Chair Matthew Goldman, Director of Programming Stacy Horne, and visionary electronic musician and producer Rob Garza.

Brad Rosenstein, FMCAC’s Associate Curator of Public Programs, moderates the panel. The presentation includes rich visuals from throughout Stern Grove Festival’s history and concludes with a live performance by musical guest Satya that brings Stern Grove’s story rocking to life.
Entering its 89th season, Stern Grove Festival is the nation’s oldest, large-scale, free music festival and an iconic San Franciscan tradition. Year after year, Stern Grove Festival has brought to its beautiful outdoor stage some of the finest musical performers of their times, representing an astonishing range of genres, styles, and moods.
Stern Grove Festival is the newest resident of Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, relocating its offices to FMCAC in 2025.
The original free music festival, Stern Grove is a non-profit organization making live music accessible to all since 1938. A summer afternoon spent enjoying a performance at the historic Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove is an opportunity for discovery, connection, and joyous celebration. All proceeds of Stern Grove Festival’s events go towards bringing free live music to San Francisco, ensuring that everyone can experience the magic of music in nature.
Rob Garza is a visionary musician and producer renowned for his boundary-pushing artistry. With an illustrious career spanning decades, he has made an indelible mark on the global music scene. As one-half of the pioneering duo Thievery Corporation (which played Stern Grove Festival in 2021), Garza helped shape the landscape of electronic music, fusing elements of dub, reggae, world music, and electronica into an unmistakably innovative sound. With his adventurous solo projects, Garza continues to captivate audiences and expand the horizons of music enthusiasts worldwide.
Singer-songwriter Satya makes music that feels like a late-night drive through your memories – warm, reflective, and raw. In her early career, she has played on bills with Sheila E., Macy Gray, Madison McFerrin, Masego (at Stern Grove in 2024), and Jason Isbell at the Ryman Theater in Nashville, TN – and she recently headlined four shows at SFJAZZ. Satya’s debut album Yellow House releases on June 5, 2026. AND most importantly, she wants everyone to know her first dog was a Boxer named Carrot.:)
