From August 10 to December 31, 2018, Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture presented Space to Breathe, a new commission by Sofie Ramos inhabiting three entry sites: the 1926 Guardhouse, the power transformer, and the driveway separating the two.

Ramos’s fantastical installations suggest a painting expanding into space, using vibrant color and exaggerated shape to transform everyday objects and interiors. She remade the Guardhouse as a miniature playhouse visible only through four windows, with Chris Wood’s ambient soundscape highlighting contrasting energies. Line drawings paralleled the pedestrian crosswalk and led to a fantasy fence concealing the power transformer, with mural-like painting recalling children’s forts, carnival architectures, and fairy tales.

The opening reception featured two activations: Moving In, choreographed by Rachael Cleveland and Ensemble, and Fumigator by Lacey Johnson and Dorothy Wang. At the mid-point of the commission, Chris Wood curated Space To Breathe — Deeper, an evening of three site-specific performances by Anthony A. Russell, Laetitia Sonami, and Kim Ip.
