Through Sep 6thIn August and September, join the National Park Service, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (SFMNHP), the SFMNHP Association, and the Melville Society at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture for a fascinating series of events leading to the 24-hour Moby-Dick Reading Marathon in October. The “Moby-Dick Lecture Series” occurs on Tuesday, August 7 and August 28, 2018 and Thursday, September 6, 2018 in the SFMNHP Resource Center in Building E, on the third floor.
Each evening features a different distinguished scholar and Moby-Dick expert discussing amazing topics related to historical or contemporary trends reflected in Herman Melville’s masterpiece novel, Moby-Dick. For Tuesday, August 7, 2018, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., noted University of the Pacific English professor Jeffrey Hole discusses “Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.”
James Noel of Los Medanos College delivers “There’s No Place Like Home: Moby-Dick and Childhood Trauma” on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The final lecture on Thursday, September 6, 2018, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. features Ryan Heryford, Assistant Professor of Environmental Literature at California State University East Bay. Heryford talks about “… ‘but drowned the infinite’: Reading Melville’s Moby-Dick In the Wake of Climate Change.”
