Join Magic Theatre to welcome their new resident company, Play On Shakespeare, at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture. The welcoming event happens on Sunday, December 18, 2022, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Building D, third floor. Through this event, Magic showcases two focus areas: new play development and new productions of Shakespeare. While partaking of drinks and light food, be part of the creative synergy merging these two theatrical worlds into one.

Magic has invited playwright Naomi Iizuka to workshop her translation of Shakespeare’s Richard II alongside parts of two new plays that she is developing. Magic has gathered some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s finest actors to participate in this experiment. Magic believes that when developed in tandem, the classics and new works feed each other.

Magic’s Lead Director, Sean San Jose, pilots a discussion about writing and the development of new plays with playwright Naomi Iizuka, Play On’s Lue Douthit, dramaturg Philippa Kelly and a stunning cast including: Daniel Duque-Estrada, Nora el Samahy, Britney Frazier, Margo Hall, Kina Kantor, Brian Rivera, and Mia Tagano.

Play On Shakespeare, as the newest resident company in the new age at Magic Theatre, is proud to be embraced by the biggest community of artists of color in residence in the Bay Area, including home resident company Campo Santo, the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, BACCE (Black Artists Contemporary Cultural Experience), Ellen Sebastian Chang / Sunhui Chang, TigerBear Productions — and the recent inclusion of the legendary Saint John Coltrane Church, along with resident artists Star Finch, Juan Amador, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Joan Osato, Ashley Smiley, Brittany White, Tanya Orellana, Russell Champa, and more to be added soon.
