Both Lee and Nelson received Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees from California College of the Arts in 2017. Lee uses photography, collage, and video to examine the history of black bodies in soil, particularly in relationship to slavery in U.S. history, when African-Americans worked with the land.

Nelson is a multi-disciplinary artist employing textiles, video, and digital manipulation to create alternative worlds of speculative identity. He combines images of the natural world with symbols, designs, and imagery evoking hoodoo, queer culture, and Afro-Futurism. Nelson’s work looks at overlapping concepts of perceived identity and the emotional memories of what it means to be a queer black man.

The opening reception takes place on Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
