Lorraine Hansberry Theatre
May 5th Through May 18thJoin Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHTSF) at Magic Theatre for Come Thru: A Cultural Celebration — a vibrant tribute to Black artistry, storytelling, and community, at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture.
Across two dynamic weeks at Magic Theatre, Come Thru invites all to experience transformative workshops led by acclaimed local artists, a revolutionary in-conversation event about black art and the future, an intimate play reading of Lisa B. Thompson’s daring new comedy African Stew, and a soul-stirring season preview overflowing with music, laughter, and plenty of bubbly. Designed for artists, storytellers, or those who believe in the power of Black theater, Come Thru offers space to honor the past, celebrate the present, and build toward a bright future — together.
The two-hour workshops run Monday, May 5, 2025 through Friday, May 9, 2025, during daytime and evening hours and feature luminaries such as LHTSF Artistic Director Margo Hall, choreographer and instructor Kendra Barnes, marketing professional Melissa Archie, singer and theater professional Velina Brown, and multi-instrumentalist and composer Idris Ackamoor. Workshops cost between $50 and $95.
“Revolutionary Black Art & The Future,” an in-conversation event, takes place on Friday, May 9, 2025, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Freedom fighter, social entrepreneur, and educator Ira X Armstrong (PEACE Out Loud) sits down with performer and activist Juba Kalamka, community organizer and transgender activist Janelle Luster, and Margo Hall for a discussion about revolutionary Black art, communal healing, and collective power in today’s everchanging world. Moderated by playwright Julius Rea, this event is followed with a celebration of Black artists from around the San Francisco Bay Area, complete with food, drinks, and music! The tickets for this event range from Free to $50 in a Pay-What-You-Can format.
The play reading of Lisa B. Thompson’s African Stew happens on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. A poignant exploration of love, class, culture, and the Black Diaspora, African Stew is a sharp and satirical comedy that brings complex relationships to the table. When an African American middle-class woman and a wealthy Nigerian immigrant announce their engagement after just six months, their families gather for a meal in Oakland, CA.
What begins as a celebration soon simmers with tension, as cultural differences, familial expectations, and questions of identity bubble to the surface. The reading is followed by a post-show discussion, offering a deeper exploration of the play’s themes and significance — culminating in a joyful toast with playwright Lisa B. Thompson, whose birthday just so happens to fall on that very day! The PWYC tickets for this reading range from Free to $50.
The final event for Come Thru is the “Season Preview & Celebration” on Sunday, May 18, 2025, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Celebrate what’s ahead at LHTSF with a joyous season preview event filled with music, laughter, and plenty of bubbly! Sway with others during a soul-stirring performance by LHTSF’s Soulful Choir, whose vibrant harmonies lift up and inspire. Get an exclusive first look at Sunset Baby, Dominique Morisseau‘s powerful exploration of family, legacy, and the complex intersections of love and revolution. And for the big finale, LHTSF unveils the 2025 New Black Voices mentee to continue their mission of uplifting Black female and femme-identifying playwrights — their daring artistry, their bold visions.
