“I don’t see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.”
The Little Mermaid (1989)
About: Swim away to Atlantica with Princess Ariel (Jodi Benson), the beautiful mermaid who wants to be with humans even though it is not allowed in this light-hearted version of Hans Christian Andersen’s darker fairy tale. Meet Ariel’s friends who help her with her forbidden quest — Sebastian the Crab (Samuel E. Wright), BFF Flounder (Jason Marin), and Scuttle The Seagull (Buddy Hackett). Alas, there are enemies in the watery realm too; Ursula the eight-armed sea witch (Pat Carroll) and Flotsam and Jetsam (Paddi Edwards), her unsavory eel retainers.
While on the ocean surface, Ariel is smitten with hunky human Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes), rescues him from a sea storm, and enchants him with her siren voice. Ariel seeks help from the evil Ursula but must give the witch her voice and too many sacrifices. Ursula and her minions follow Ariel to the surface and sabotage her romantic plans. It takes the prince, Ariel’s father King Triton (Kenneth Mars), and most of the sea people to set things right.
