The Long Now Foundation
Nov 29th @ 7:00 p.m.Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture (FMCAC)’s resident organization The Long Now Foundation invites all to the “We Are As Gods” Podcast Release Party at The Interval in Building A. The party happens on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.). Tickets include one free drink ticket for a cocktail or mocktail from The Interval’s extensive and award-winning cocktail menu.
“We are as Gods” is an eight-chapter, cinematic audio documentary exploring culture through the various chapters in the life of Stewart Brand. This event is a silent disco listening party of the 45-minute “Long Now” episode, which features never-before-heard interviews with Long Now founders about the process and challenges of building The Clock of the Long Now. The podcast’s producers are attending, so grab a cocktail and ask them some questions after the show.
“We are as gods and might as well get good at it.”
These are the opening lines that environmentalist, technologist, and Long Now co-Founder Stewart Brand wrote for The Whole Earth Catalog. His thesis — that humans should use our god-like powers to build a better way to live — is at the core of his extraordinary life. At key historical moments in the 20th century, Stewart Brand was behind the scenes shaping things.
From acid tests to space odysseys to modern environmentalism to social networks and open source technology, Stewart was there early on — posing the framing questions, marching in the streets, running the camera, gathering the experts, and then, before the scene got boring, moving onto the next project.
The Long Now Foundation offers talks featuring expert perspectives on long-term topics. The talks are available to the public as live, in-person and streaming events on YouTube and Long Now Live. Hundreds of seminars since the beginning of the program in 2003 are also available to view in the archives.
