Oedipus El Rey (10-Year Revival)

Presented By

Magic Theatre

Through Jun 23rd

The grand finale for Magic Theatre’s 2018-2019 season re-unites Artistic Director Loretta Greco with playwright Luis Alfaro for the 10-year anniversary revival of critically acclaimed Oedipus El Rey at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. Alfaro’s gritty re-telling of the ancient Greek epic moves the action to South-Central Los Angeles and recasts the archetypal characters as  modern heroic individuals struggling with timeless issues.

Alfaro re-imagines Oedipus as a troubled young hero who dreams of controlling his own destiny while trapped behind the prison walls where he has been confined for most of his existence. Entrapment and loss of control are recurring themes for Oedipus and other characters in his life. The actors play people who grapple with fate, history, and violence as they discover they cannot change their destinies on their own. Belief, family ties, and love contribute additional conflict to Alfaro’s terrifying masterpiece that poses the conundrum: does fate control us or is it just the system that kills our dreams?
