Magic Theatre: Garuda’s Wing By Naomi Iizuka
Magic Theatre & Play On! Shakespeare
Through Jun 23rdMagic Theatre and Play On! Shakespeare present Garuda’s Wing by Naomi Iizuka at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture. Directed by Margo Hall, Garuda’s Wing is a ghost play of interpersonal intimacy and international investigation.
Garuda’s Wing is an intergenerational, global spellbinder that is also an exploration, shrouded in mystery, entangled in the effects of colonization. Garuda’s Wing is magical in that it is a play that is both a mesmerizing trance and one that spans continents and time.
Garuda’s Wing begins in Borneo, then heads to Jakarta, Indonesia. During the transition, Garuda’s Wing travels through generations, histories, and bloodlines. The play involves a search, an unearthing, and murder; on the personal familial intimate level as well as connecting to the large global colonial plane. Iizuka possesses the ability to create intimate human portraits, while simultaneously evoking the layers of revolution and colonial effects – a stunning and magnetic feat.
Garuda’s Wing plays June 5, 2024 through June 23, 2024, Wednesday through Saturday, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 4:00 p.m. Opening night is Saturday, June 8, 2024, 8:00 p.m. Following the Thursday and Friday performances on June 6 and June 7, audiences are welcome to remain at the theater for a post-show conversation between playwright Naomi Iizuka and Magic’s Lead Director Sean San José.
