Magic Theatre and Campos Santo present a second 2023 production — The N* Lovers by Marc Anthony Thompson at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture. Marc Anthony Thompson is a world-renowned composer, songwriter, musician, and performer who has spent the past two decades creating new performance pieces for the stage with the great Roger Guenveur Smith.

In his first full-fledged play, Marc Anthony takes us into an inspired true story of The Crafts — a couple who miraculously escaped from chattel slavery at a plantation in Georgia to freedom in Boston, based on the couple’s own account: Running A Thousand Miles For Freedom: The Escape Of William & Ellen Craft From Slavery. A provocation in Black creation, from its brazen title to the intentional inversion of minstrelsy, The N* Lovers is a genre-shattering piece that layers original music and movement with film and engages audiences in the horror and humor of history masterfully retold.

The N* Lovers plays May 3, 2023 through May 21, 2023, Wednesday through Saturday, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 3:00 p.m. Three shows have been added for Memorial Day Weekend on Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 28, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. Marc Anthony Thompson co-directs the play with Magic’s Lead Director Sean San José.
