Magic Theatre Season 2023: The Travelers By Luis Alfaro

Presented By

Magic Theatre & Campo Santo

Through Mar 12th

Magic Theatre starts the 2023 play season with The Travelers by Luis Alfaro at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture. Set inside a nearly abandoned Catholic monastery, The Travelers explores a disconnected community of men in search of connection and corazon with intimate honesty and inspired humor.

These travelers are emblematic of the communities of California’s Central Valley as they seek some soul connection in a state that is building prisons over schools and forgoing any sense of faith over fear-mongering. In the original voice of the Latine world, Alfaro’s writing breaks through religious dogma, recognizes cultural connections, and offers solace for communal souls.

Experience why Alfaro remains a quintessential part of Magic Theatre (four productions and three world premieres in the last decade) and at the center of its future in many ways. Alfaro seeks to create a play that reflects on California and the nation as they affect the present states of many communities: immigrant life, the heartland, migrant roots, lost connections, and longing in-between.

This premiere focuses on an all-male presenting group of actors, and is designed by an all-female identifying or nonbinary team, led by director Catherine Castellanos.

The Travelers plays February 15, 2023 through March 5, 2023, Wednesday through Saturday, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 3:00 p.m. Three shows have been added March 10 to 12, 2023, Friday and Saturday, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 3:00 p.m. Tickets cost $30 to $70. Magic’s $150 Performance Pass provides admission to the three plays in Magic’s 2023 season and admission to another event from Magic’s resident companies, collaborators, or special guests, along with access to play readings.
