SFMOMA Artists Gallery presents more than a dozen plein air paintings by Nicholas Coley. Coley is a familiar figure in San Francisco’s Marina District, where he paints beautiful landscapes; he also paints in the Presidio and at other scenic spots in San Francisco.

Coley studied painting at L’Ecole Marchutz, where, according to his artist statement, he learned “the fanatical ethos of a small school in the south of France [that] made Cezanne its figurehead.” Drawing on these influences, Coley applies impressionistic concepts of brilliant color and vibrant energy to traditional landscapes, as well as more urban subjects such as parking meters and the shadows under cars and RVs.
