Papel Picado | Paper Cutout Workshop

May 20th @ 2:00 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.Join The Mexican Museum and artist Carmen Lomas Garza for a special “Papel Picado | Paper Cutout Workshop” at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. The hands-on workshop presents techniques for folding and cutting colorful tissue paper to make banderitas de papel picado (little paper banners) used as decorations for fiestas and festivals in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.
This workshop is open to parents and children who work together to create three or more cutout designs and attach the designs to string so that they are ready to hang at celebrations all summer long. Carmen Lomas Garza is an acclaimed artist who has work in The Mexican Museum’s current exhibit, “Family, Homeland, Revolution: Stories Of The Chicano Movement.” She also makes paper and metal cutouts and mixed-media artwork with cutouts.
