The Forty Rules of Love
Hassan El Jai — acclaimed Moroccan theater, voice, film, and TV performer — brings to life the story of two, very different contemporary characters discovering romance in a dramatic reading of best-selling novel The Forty Rules of Love. Elif Shafak’s novel follows the lives of a Jewish-American housewife and a Sufi Muslim based in Amsterdam and the unlikely love they develop for each other. El Jai’s adaptation transforms the tale into a mystical journey and an artistic experience anchored by personal revelations.
These performances by Hassan El Jai are hosted by Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture as part of the San Francisco International Arts Festival, which runs from May 19 – June 5 exclusively at FMCAC.
