Nov 8th @ 9:00pm“How did some slip of a girlyboy from Communist East Berlin become the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before you?”
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
About: In this film adaptation of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s East Village underground and then star-fueled Broadway play, East German philosophy student and glam rock aficionado Hansel Schmidt becomes Hedwig Robinson: a newlywed to an American GI en route to a new life in the United States. Telling her story through power ballads and raw rockers, the genderqueer singer and her band play Bilgewater’s seafood restaurants nationwide on the tail of Tommy Gnosis – the rock superstar who owes his career to Hedwig. As our singer recalls Tommy as her idealized other half, she faces her own heartbreak, ambition, and narcissistic needs – and not always well.
Director: John Cameron Mitchell, 2001
