Raiders of the Lost Ark
About: Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Ford) proves himself ever-ready to leap out of the classroom and into a far-flung adventure. In 1936, U.S. Army agents enlist Jones’ help in countering Nazi digs for mysterious treasures. When Jones deduces that the Germans seek the biblical Ark of the Covenant, he’ll need help from ex-girlfriend Marion Ravenwood (Allen) to stop a rival — Dr. René Belloq (Freeman) — from leading the Nazis to this object of unspeakable power. George Lucas developed the story idea with noted director and screenwriter (and San Francisco resident) Phillip Kaufman, imagining an homage to the swashbuckling adventure films before the war.
