“I hope you’re not letting yourself be influenced by the guns these pocket-edition desperadoes are waving around, because I’ve practiced taking guns

FLIX PIX Staff Selection: A tribute to San Francisco with glorious black-and-white cinematography; The Maltese Falcon is a noir salute to Dashiell Hammett’s cynical, hard-boiled writing. — Claudia

The Maltese Falcon

About: In this San Francisco-set Hollywood classic, private investigator Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) accepts a case from the mysterious Ruth Wonderly (Mary Astor) and finds himself inexplicably drawn into the hunt for a jeweled treasure — and coping with a body count! Based on Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel, the film’s story, cinematography, characters, and attitude set the terms for “film noir” as a genre. John Huston’s first film launched the director’s more than 40-year run of indelible movie making and consistently scores a place among the best films ever made.
