Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHTSF) presents a “New Black Voices” Mentorship Program workshop production of Phaedra Tillery-Boughton’s SistahFriend at Magic Theatre.
For Portia, Kendra, and Sia, friendship has meant showing up through decades of triumphs, heartaches, motherhood, spiritual journeys, and all the messy, beautiful moments it takes to become their truest selves.
Time and time again, they’ve weathered it all. But what happens when this sacred friendship between these three Black women is shaken to its core?
Drawn from real-life events, playwright Phaedra Tillery-Boughton’s SistahFriend is a new dramatic comedy about love, faith, and the friendships that make everyone whole.
Don’t miss LHTSF’s bold “New Black Voices” workshop production – a play about friendship, for anyone who has ever dared to love fiercely.

San Francisco kids unite during a strike, uncovering hidden tunnels, chasing treasure, and finding friendship in an unexpected Presidio adventure. Young Performers Theatre’s production of Emily Cronan’s play is funny, heartfelt, and wildly imaginative.

Young Performers Theatre (YPT) alum Emily Cronan wrote Tunnel Top Travelers specifically for YPT actors. The play deftly weaves together ideas they came up with for their own characters, one of whom communicates mainly through meows. There’s an a cappella song about unicorns and Pokémon, along with references to cultural touchstones such as Super Mario, Olivia Rodrigo, and Bad Bunny.
When a citywide teacher strike shuts down schools across San Francisco, a ragtag group of kids from every corner of the city – public schoolers, private school elites, and free-spirited forest kids – are thrown together for a chaotic “field trip” in the Presidio. With two overconfident student leaders in charge and zero adult supervision, what starts as forced team-building quickly turns into something far more unexpected.
Drawn by whispers of hidden tunnels beneath the city, the kids embark on a secret adventure in search of treasure that might just save their schools. Along the way, alliances shift, secrets surface, and unlikely friendships form – while a mysterious figure named Orin invites them into a magical underground world where anything feels possible.
The enigmatic Orin embodies the story’s fantasy element. As a young boy, after surviving the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, he became a caretaker of treasures in tunnels beneath the city and the conductor of a secret, underground MUNI rail line.
Orin’s disconnect with his present-day descendants in the world above has a parallel in unresolved divides and frictions among the different factions of the Presidio field-trip students. As their destinies become intertwined with Orin’s, the kids discover that the people you least expect can become your closest allies, and the real treasure isn’t what you find – it’s who you find it with.
Packed with laughs, imagination and surprises aplenty, Tunnel Top Travelers is a high-energy, family-friendly story about courage, curiosity and what can happen when kids take the lead. Tunnel Top Travelers explores what it means to grow up, speak up, and find connection in uncertain times.
Read more about the Tunnel Top Travelers on YPT’s blog.

Bharata Dance’s unique production depicts the tale of a sacred Nataraja idol journeying from temple to theft, exile, and auction; revealing devotion, loss, and the search for where it truly belongs.

A Thousand Years’ Journey is an original Bharatanatyam dance-theater production that tells the story of a sacred bronze Nataraja idol from Tamil Nadu, tracing its life across a millennium through devotion, displacement, and rediscovery. Told from the perspective of the statue itself, the work begins with its creation by a temple sculptor and its consecration as a living deity, followed by centuries as a silent witness to the lives of villagers, kings, priests, dancers, lovers, and seekers who found meaning in its presence.
As history unfolds, the idol experiences both reverence and rupture – social hierarchies, colonial disruption, and ultimately its theft from the temple and entry into the global art market. Transported across borders and stripped of context, it becomes an object of value rather than a center of faith.
Through evocative movement, original music, narration, and multimedia, the production explores the emotional, cultural, and spiritual consequences of this journey, asking what is lost when sacred art is commodified and displaced.
At its heart, A Thousand Years’ Journey is about relationship – between people and the divine, between memory and identity, and between art and belonging. Blending classical Bharatanatyam vocabulary with contemporary storytelling, the ensemble brings to life a deeply human narrative of devotion, injustice, resilience, and the enduring search for home.

Mark Foehringer’s Alice In Wonderland returns to the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture for a delightful presentation of a classic children’s tale.

This danced 50-minute romp is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless story, Alice’s Adventure In Wonderland. It is performed to a score by Camille Saint Saens and played live by our orchestra conducted by Keisuke Nakagoshi.
This version is very much Foehringer’s own personal interpretation of Alice as a heroine who faces challenges and solves them. It features scenic design by Peter Crompton, costumes by Stephanie Verrieres and Nicole Kreglow, and projection design by Frédéric Boulay.
