The Performance Art Symposium features two components that take a critical look at art, specifically the stripping down of art, and the Dada Movement.

6:15-6:45 p.m.: Ros Salters Acosta & Maria T Allocco present At War With Language, a piece that explores the peeling off of layers of identity to express a state of undefined form and spaces to unveil a more raw truth. Throughout the piece, layers of clothing will be peeled off — moving through stages of being weighted-down to revealing a diaphanous final layer and epicenter.

7:00-9:30 p.m.: John Held Jr and Jasper Patterson present Anti-Art Then & Now, a critical assessment of Dada as a protest movement with an anti-establishment manifesto that casts long shadows. Panelists John Held Jr. and Jasper Patterson will examine the long history of anti-art sentiments, movements and manifestations as related to today’s generation of Dada-influenced creative. The effect of Dada was to create a climate in which art was alive to the moment and not paralyzed by the traditions and restrictions of established values. By exploring the connections between successive movements with similar sentiments can we illuminate the enduring influence and relevance of Dada today?

This art symposium is hosted by Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture as part of the San Francisco International Arts Festival, which runs from May 19 – June 5 exclusively at FMCAC.
