In Old Age
Magic Theatre
Through Apr 21stMagic Theatre’s 2018-2019 season continues with In Old Age, the fifth installment in Mfoniso Udofia’s acclaimed The Ufot Cycle, at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. First-generation Nigerian-American storyteller Udofia has completed six plays in her nine-play epic The Ufot Cycle, which follows multiple generations of the Ufot family as they migrate from Nigeria to the U.S. and experience their new homes throughout America.
In Old Age depicts the unlikely spiritual connection that forms between repairman Azell Abernathy and homeowner Abasiama Ufot, who has hired Abernathy to fix the floors of her decrepit New England home. The two personalities initially clash as Abasiama Ufot’s stubborn resistance challenges Abernathy’s strongly held convictions. However, just as Ufot’s life takes a new turn, both she and Abernathy discover the true nature of forgiveness and love. Udofia’s In Old Age is a lively addition to The Ufot Cycle — presenting both purges and peacemaking, along with wild frenzy and quiet faith.
