The Mexican Museum

The Mexican Museum hosts a significant exhibit, “Mexico In San Francisco: Works On Paper From Diego Rivera to Alejandro Santiago,” at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. View 42 diverse works of art on paper by 15 artists from 10 San Francisco Bay Area collections.

The exhibit includes art by Mexican-born masters who played key roles in creating and defining modernist Mexican art, including Alfredo Ramos Martínez (1872-1946), Leopoldo Méndez (1902-1969), José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), Diego Rivera (1886-1957), and Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). Also on view is spectacular work from expatriate artists: English-born Surrealist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), Guatemalan native Carlos Mérida (1891-1985), and Spanish-born Surrealist Remedios Varo (1908-1963).

“Mexico in San Francisco” features work by José Luis Cuevas (1934-2017), the principal artist involved in the “break” (ruptura) with the “Mexican School” that was dominated by the Mexican Muralists. The exhibit offers a glimpse of the work of Oaxaca artists, including the eclectic and incredibly talented Francisco Toledo (b. 1940), and the influential Alejandro Santiago (1964-2013).
