Nina Dietzel: Dreamland
SFMOMA Artists Gallery
Through Apr 1stSFMOMA Artists Gallery presents “Dreamland,” an exhibit of photographer Nina Dietzel’s images of abandoned structures in California’s Salton Sea area, at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. Dietzal’s “Dreamland” is a forsaken, empty place that is transitioning from human occupation back into a wild, natural state.
The photographs in “Dreamland” are faded, muted depictions of a crumbled, post-industrial landscape. Rusted folding chairs topple in slow-motion; while peeling, sagging trailers, decaying coils of once colorful hoses, and other residential detritus suggest a territory that is dissolving back into the ooze. Dietzel has captured a recurring aspect of the American West — where boom towns deteriorate into ghost towns in a nearly continuous cycle of frenzied growth declining into abject decay.
The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Please RSVP at ArtistsGallery@SFMOMA.org.)
