Through May 1stFor Spring 2019, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) | Fort Mason Campus offers great art courses for the public at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. Held on evenings and weekends, these painting courses are perfect for beginners or more advanced students and are taught by experienced artists, all SFAI graduates.
Introduction To Oil Painting (Sections I & II). Section I. Tuesdays, January 29, 2019 to April 3, 2019, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (no class March 19, 2019) $530. Section II. Thursdays, February 14, 2019 to April 11, 2019, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (no class March 21, 2019) $385. Large- and small-scale oil painter Robert X. Burden shares classical oil painting techniques and encourages students to experiment with form, value, color, composition, perspective, and figure/ground relationships. Introductory assignments strengthen observational skills and focus on realism. Later classes cover figure painting through alla prima painting (complete in one session) and sustained poses (completed via multiple sessions). Narrative Painting. Thursdays, January 31, 2019 to April 25, 2019, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (no class March 21, 2019). Painter Felicita Norris leads this water-based painting course that covers paint handling, use of color, value, and composition. Norris instructs with slide lectures, readings, class discussions, critiques, and studio work time. $530 (Meets in Studio 27, SFAI | Fort Mason Campus.)
W*AH (Womxn* Art Handlers) Workshops. Wednesday, February 6, 2019, March 6, 2019, April 3, 2019, and May 1, 2019, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Instructors Kat Trataris and Marcela Pardo Ariza focus on basic tool use and word-working techniques. Free (Meets In the SFAI Woodshop, Pier 2)
The Masterpiece. Wednesdays, February 6, 2019 to May 1, 2019, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (no class March 20, 2019) Taught by proficient painter and artist Ingrid V. Wells, this oil painting course shares best practices for creating a realist oil painting. Each student creates a proposal for a complex oil painting, including painting imagery and a project time schedule. Recalling Home: Painting & The Domestic Narrative. Saturdays, February 23, 2019 to April 27, 2019, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Painter Felicita Norris conducts a class exploring psychology and emotion as springboards for a series of mini-paintings covering the theme of family, memories, personal experiences, and more. The Structured Accident.
