FORT MASON FLIX: The Exorcist

“Have you ever heard of exorcism? It’s a stylized ritual in which rabbis or priests try to drive out the so-called invading spirit. It’s pretty much discarded these days, except by the Catholics who keep it in the closet as a sort of embarrassment.”
The Exorcist
About: Nominated for ten Academy Awards, The Exorcist remains one of the most celebrated and popular horror films ever made. Based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 best-selling novel, itself based on a sanctioned 1949 exorcism in St. Louis, the film follows actress Chris MacNeil (Burstyn) as she seeks first medical and then theological help for her ailing daughter Regan (Blair). As the latter reacts to a doubting Jesuit (Miller) and an experienced exorcist (von Sydow) with demonic behavior, original audiences grew sick, fainted, or fled the theater. The film entered the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2010.
